Diving with us:
Dive center opening hour, early morning dives and meeting time:
At Philippine Fun Divers, we open our doors at 8a.m. (0800h). Sometimes divers request early morning dives and we are happy to open as early as 6a.m. (0600h). We usually gather at the dive center in between 830a.m. (0830h) and 9a.m. (0900h).
Preparation for diving:
Starting at 8a.m. (0800h), our staff already starts preparing the customers equipment and places them in front of the dive center. Divers just have to do a last visual check before it is carried to the boat.
Newly arrived certified divers have enough time to fill and sign up the necessary documents, which are:
1. Liability release and assumption of risk, and
2. Philippine Fun Divers registration sheet
For a certified diver to be able to dive with us, we need you to provide us with the following:
1. Certification card (C-card) from the certifying dive association (PADI, SSI, NAUI, CMAS, etc.)
2. Dive log book
3. If handy, a medical certificate regarding your health condition for scuba diving. The license card will stay with us until all dives are finished. This makes it also easier for the secretary to identify the divers.
If a diver forgets to bring his or her license card, we can check the PADI website and trace the certification level. As for the other certifying agencies, we suggest having a certified true copy ready. Unfortunately, these certifying agencies do not provide online verification systems.
Equipment, selecting and storage:
After the paperwork is properly done, we will provide you with the equipment. All our equipments are new and regularly maintained, and changed, if needed. All the equipments from the dive center are numbered and will be registered on the PFDB registration sheet. We have all sizes (from XXS until XXL) available for BCD’s, wetsuits, booties, and fins.
We have a variety of lead weights ranging from 0.5 kg, 1kg, 1.5kgs and 2kgs. The equipments and other items will then be placed in a crate (plastic box) with your name on it. This crate will stay with you until all dives are finished. For those with multiple day dives, your crate containing all your equipments, except the wetsuit which will be
hung, will be stored inside the equipment room. The equipment room is locked at night and is covered by a centralized alarm system. Please do not leave your dive computer and/or digital camera inside the crate.
2 Tanks and compressor:
We can provide you with 8L, 12L and 15L scuba tanks. 2 compressors (Bauer Mariner and Bauer Oceanus) provide you with perfect air. The filters are changed every 50- 60 tank refills. We have at the moment 110 tanks in use.
Do You need to purchase your own equipment?
We are also a retail facility and you can purchase equipments from us. At the moment, we carry mainly the Aqua Lung products. A catalog will be available for you with all items in store for your easy reference.
If You have not gone diving for a long time?
No problem. If you haven’t gone diving for 6 to 12 months, we can do a check-up dive which is basically a fun dive with a certified PADI dive master or PADI instructor. We will focus more on equipment assembly/disassemble, proper weighting, buddy check and buoyancy control. Also the briefing will be more intensive in reviewing safety procedures especially with regards to the buddy system and PADI S.A.F.E. diving practices.
If you haven’t gone diving for more than a year, we suggest a more intensive check-up dive in order to give you back the confidence you need under water. This check-up dive is basically similar to the description above, but with additional skills. These skills are Mask clearing, Regulator recovery, Alternate air source procedure and Hovering. Most divers welcome a check-up dive since the additional cost for it is not substantial as against the cost of a fun dive.
If you haven’t gone diving for more than two years, it is imperative to take the PADI Scuba Review Program prior to the first dive. The program includes Knowledge review, Confined Water Skills and one optional Open Water Dive.
Preparation for 2 or more dives to sites far from the shore:
Once the equipments are checked by the divers, we will transfer them to the dive boat (traditional banka outrigger boat). This boat cannot get ashore if the tide is low. If this is so, we will load all the crates, tanks and other equipments to our speedboat and transfer them to the dive boat which will be moored about 300m away from the shore. After all the equipments are onboard the dive boat, the divers shall be transported next. Once onboard the dive boat, do a last check of all your equipment. Equipment assembly will be done on-board before reaching the dive site or at the dive site in case the ocean is a bit wavy on the way. Our staff will ask the divers if they wish them to assemble their dive equipments for a more
comfortable experience and as an added customer service. We encourage the divers to do these themselves for their own peace of mind, and our staff can gladly assist you.
Let’s get wet…Let’s dive farther away from the dive center:
Under the ‘Bohol Dive Sites’ link in our website, you can find the exact descriptions of all dive spots including travel time.
If diving at Balicasag, Doljo area, Momo area, Arco point area, Pamilacan or Cervera shoal area we do a minimum of 2 dives to optimize the trip due to its distance.
a) When diving at Balicasag or Pamilacan, we stay there for all the dives;
b) When diving at Doljo area, we dive at Doljo point and Puntod Island; or
c) When diving at Arco area, we dive at Arco point and BBC.
There are other combinations. More dives are possible but our regular daily Banka boat trip is limited to a maximum of 3 dives. The Banka can only carry a maximum of 3 tanks per diver. If more than 3 dives are requested, the succeeding dives can be done at dive sites near the dive center.
Our guides will do the briefing on board as well as selecting the right buddy for you in case you don’t have a buddy with you. If you are alone or don’t have a buddy the guide can be your buddy.
We require a buddy check.
If you are not sure about your proper weight, we encourage doing a weight check at the surface prior to descent on the first dive.
A minimum of 1 to 1.5 hours surface interval is required in between all dives for safety purposes. We suggest that you bring your own bottle of water and a snack. If we do 2 to 3 dives, we are back at the dive center between 2:30p.m. (1430h) and 3:30p.m (1530h). If we do 4 dives, we are back at 5p.m (1700h).
Preparation for 1 dive to the dive sites close to the dive center:
When we dive at the dive sites near the dive center (2 to 10min away at the Panglao shoreline), we assemble the equipment at the dive center. Our staff will transfer them to the dive boat.
Let’s get wet…Let’s dive closer to the dive center:
If diving at closer sites to the dive center, i.e. Crystal sanctuary which is 4 min away, we use our speed boat. The briefing will be done at the dive center as well as the selection of your buddy. If you are alone or don’t have a buddy the guide will be your buddy.
The buddy check can be done on-board the speed boat. Some divers prefer a buddy check at the surface. We don’t recommend this method because of the possible presence of strong current. After the dive, we will proceed back to the dive center and a minimum surface interval of 1 to 1.5 hours is required, should you wish to do another dive.
Back at the shore of Philippine Fun Divers after diving:
After all your dives, our staff will carry your crates, equipments and tanks from the boat back to the dive center’s washing area. We suggest that you take care of your equipments by yourself. We have 3 washing basins: One for BCD, regulator, mask and snorkel; one for wetsuit, booties, fins, hood and weight belt and one for cameras. Our staff is there should you need assistance. Don’t forget to put back the dusk cup before rinsing the regulator.
After your equipment is washed, you can hang most of the stuff opposite the basins. The small items can be placed back into the crate right away. Once damp, we suggest for you to organize all hung equipments into your assigned crates and transferring them to the equipment room. Should you be unavailable to do this, please inform any of our staff so they can do this for you. No equipment will be left outside the equipment room overnight.
Closing time and night dives:
Our closing time is 8p.m. (2000h). Night dives end almost about this time. Preparations for night dives start at 5:30p.m. (1730h). We get ready to board the speed boat at around 6p.m. (1800h). The best night dive spots are just in front of the dive center. The reef has a width of approximately 280m and it takes 2min to reach the diving
point.
General safety guidelines/practices:
Your safety is our outmost concern and here are the most important points:
1. Vessel operators: There are 3 personnel onboard, as required by the government regulatory agency: 1 licensed
Captain, 1 licensed Marine diesel mechanic, and 1 boatman.
2. We have 2 plastic containers on board our Banka boat which contains the following safety equipment:
Container 1:
- Oxygen with nose supply and pocket mask
- First Aid kid
- Emergency signaling device
- Mobile phone
Container 2:
- Fire extinguisher
- Axe
- Floating device with 50m line
- Search light
- Bright light for orientation purposes when night diving
- Dive planner
Also on board are a life jackets for every passenger, 2 life rings and safety stop equipment.
3. We follow the PADI S.A.F.E. diving practices.
4. We require a buddy check prior to every dive.
5. Our maximum depth for experienced divers is 40m.
6. Our maximum depth for less experienced divers is 25m.
7. Our maximum depth for new divers (newly certified Open Water divers) is 18m.
8. After the dive (at the boats boarding ladder) our staff will lift up your equipment into the boat. We do not suggest climbing into the boat with your equipment still on your back and the weight belt on. Based on our research, this may lead to severe accidents such as falling backwards off the ladder, slipping on deck, injuring or breaking a joint, or the like. Worse case is when other divers get injured from your accident.
9. A briefing is mandatory prior to every dive.
10. We let divers dive without an assigned guide only if they know the area (orientation dives) with assigned buddy and when we are convinced of their safe diving and environmental friendly practices.
11. We are very environmental conscious and it is not allowed to touch anything under water except in case of emergency. Buoyancy control is of paramount importance and if we discover buoyancy problems we suggest a PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty course. Keeping away from corals is the best way of protecting them when diving.
12. We request divers not to use gloves except if there are special reasons. First of all, diving with gloves tends to make grasping on rocks or even corals convenient especially when having buoyancy problems or during drift dives. We rather suggest a Peak Performance Buoyancy and/or Drift Dive Specialty course in order to perform better (if you need to brush up skills) instead of using gloves. There are also divers who continuously touch things under water or even bring stuff to the surface and most of the time, these are the divers using gloves.
13. Once a year, all tanks undergo visual inspections and cleaning.
14. Once every 5 years, all tanks undergo hydrostatic testing.
15. Our classroom holds a stretcher and a large Oxygen tank with 100% O2.
Environmental user fees:
We need to pay PHP 500.00 mooring fee at Pamilacan Island. We just divide/share this amount among all divers on this trip.

KAINGIT BEACH

Tagbilaran City: A popular beach resort in Tagbilaran which is crowded with bathers during weekends. It is situated in a cove which provides for calm water even during stormy weather. It is located at the end of a side street from Graham Avenue. It is being developed and maintained by the city government.

SANTA FE BEACH

Albuquerque – 13 km from Tagbilaran City: A favorite white-sand beach fronting the open sea of Mindanao. It is located about 1.5 km from the Poblacion of Albuquerque.

ANDA BEACH

Anda – 101 km from Tagbilaran City: A white-sand beach along the Poblacion noted for its cleanliness and unpolluted sea.

LAYA BEACH

Baclayon – 9 km from Tagbilaran City: A wide area shaded by tall coconut trees, Laya Beach is ideal for picnicking. A rest house is available at minimum cost.

BIKINI BEACH

Dauis – 8 km from Tagbilaran City: An ideal beach for all bathers with calm waters and shading palm trees. Huts and benches are available for picnickers. Coral fishes abound here. (Bring your own bikini!)

Dimiao – 40 km from Tagbilaran City: Once chosen as the campsite for Boys and Girl Scouts of Bohol, it is located along the national highway before reaching the Dimiao town proper.

DUERO BEACH

Duero — 77 km from Tagbilaran City: A beautiful beach located in the eastern part of Bohol noted for its stretch of white sand shaded by palm and coconut trees.

CANUBA BEACH

Jagna – 58 km from Tagbilaran City: An ideal place for bathing with clean water and white sand. The beach is shaded by palm trees and a cliff in the eastern part of the beach.

CLARING BEACH

Loay – 28 km from Tagbilaran City: A long stretch of white sand, the beach was developed during the time of Senator Jose Claring. It is complete with recreational facilities and a bath house. It is located 1 km from Loay.

LINTUAN BEACH

Loon – 25 km from Tagbilaran City: It is the favorite beach resort in this part of the province. It has white sand extending out for some distance and is ideal for children.

ALONA BEACH

Panglao – 20 km from Tagbilaran City: A long stretch of white sand facing the Mindanao Sea, Alona has many full-service beach and dive resorts. Excellent scuba diving is nearby and trips to Balicasag and Pamilacan Islands can be arranged.

DOLJO BEACH

Panglao – 19 km from Tagbilaran City: Ideal for scuba diving, the long stretch of white sand fronts undisturbed coral reefs harboring numerous fish and beautiful sea shells. The waters are clear and calm.

Historical Sites

BLOOD COMPACT SITE

Barangay Bool, Tagbilaran City: An historical marker marks the location where Datu Sikatuna, a native Chieftain, forged a blood compact with Don Miguel Lopez de Legazpi representing the King of Spain, for the purpose of fostering friendly relations between the two nations. The Blood Compact on March 16, 1565 is considered as the first “Treaty of Friendship” between Europe and Asia.

PRESIDENT CARLOS P. GARCIA MEMORIAL PARK

Tagbilaran City: A joint undertaking of Boholanos from all over the country and abroad have erected a park in loving memory of the greatest Boholanos — Carlos Polistico Garcia, the fourth President of the Republic of the Philippines. It sits on a rolling site with an area of 11 hectares chosen by Garcia himself in 1939 when he was governor of Bohol. Here, one can see the exquisite monument of marble base and a life-size bronze statue by Bohol’s famous sculptor, National Artist Napolean Abueva. In the background is the provincial capital.

MT. CARMEL HILL

Balilihan – 24-km from Tagbilaran City: Atop the Mt. Carmel Hill right in the heart of Balilihan town, is a historical tower of adobe and limestone. These materials were hauled from the town of Baclayon. It was built to serve as a belfry of a church which was burned down during the Philippine revolution. Like a sentinel, the tower stands as guard over the town. Concrete stairways were built to make the tower more accessible.

BEHIND THE CLOUDS

Catigbian – 38 km from Tagbilaran City: This is the cradle of the resistance movement in Bohol during the Japanese occupation when a group of courageous men composed of disbanded soldiers and ordinary citizens started guerilla operations to liberate the island. The encampment nestles in a deep ravine hidden from the enemy. When opposition headquarters were transferred to Carmen, the encampment was used to hold enemy prisoners.

DAGOHOY MARKER

Danao — 92 km from Tagbilaran City: The Dagohoy historical marker in Magtangtang, Danao town was installed by the Philippine Historical Commission to honor the heroic deeds of Francisco Dagohoy who led the longest revolt in the country against the Spaniards which lasted for 84 years. Magtangtang was Dagohoy’s headquarters or hideout during the revolt. Hundreds of Dagohoy’s followers preferred death inside the cave than surrender. Their skeletons still remain.

PUNTA CRUZ

Maribijoc – 14 km from Tagbilaran City: This is an ancient stone watchtower built by the townspeople as a lookout for incoming pirates. On a rock lip that juts out into the sea fronting the tower stands a wooden cross. Legend has it that by extending a mysterious spell over the sea, the cross has saved many people from the ravages of pirates and marauders. The tower holds a commanding view of the sea facing Cebu, Siquijor and Mindanao and has been officially designated as a historical tourist spot. The area surrounding the tower has been developed into a park.

RELIGIOUS SITES

BACLAYON CHURCH

Baclayon – 6 km from Tagbilaran City: The oldest stone-church in the Philippines was built by the Jesuits in 1595. Its ancient massive edifice still retains its centuries-old architectural design. Church relics and artifacts from this early period can be viewed at the adjacent museum.

DAUIS CHURCH

Dauis – 3 km from Tagbilaran City: One of Bohol’s most beautiful churches, its semi-modern facade still retains the original Spanish architecture. The interior has lifelike murals painted on the ceiling. The patron saint, the Virgin of the Assumption, is believed to possess miraculous powers and is the object of veneration particularly during its annual festivities. Legend has it that when the town was invaded by pirates, the town folk locked themselves inside the church until they ran out of provisions and water. Suddenly a well appeared at the foot of the altar where people started drawing water. It is still the main source of water for people living in the church vicinity. The water is, surprisingly, absolutely fresh even though the well is located a short distance from the sea.

FATIMA HILL

Carmen – 55 km from Tagbilaran City: The venerated image of Our Lady of Fatima stands on a hill with concrete stairs. A pilgrimage to the hill is celebrated every 13th of May by the faith full.

ILIHAN HILL

Jagna – 54 km from Tagbilaran City: Ilihan Hill has become a religious site for pilgrimages by the faithful. It is located about 4 km from Jagna town by winding road. It overlooks the Sea of Mindanao and the evening vista is beautiful. On top of the hill is the image of the Barangay Sang Birhin where a chapel has been in her honor.

LOON CHURCH

Loon – 25 km from Tagbilaran City: This ancient church is connected to Napo, the former seat of the town, by 154 stone steps believed to be the longest stairway in the country and a reminder of Spanish forced labor.

BANAT-I HILL

Tagbilaran City: This hill commands a scenic view overlooking the vast Sea of Mindanao, Negros and Siquijor provinces, and the strait of Panglao Island. Elevation is 145 meters.

ELLY HILL

Tagbilaran City: Its formation is similar to that of the famous Chocolate Hills. Elevation is 100 meters and it is situated in the northern part of the city about 5 km away.

CHOCOLATE HILLS

Carmen – 55 km from Tagbilaran City: This is the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol. Among the thousands of perfectly cone-shaped hills which abound in Central Bohol, two of the hills have been developed into a resort. On top of the hill are two youth hostels with a conference room, cozy cottages with private rooms and accommodation. On top of the second hill is an observation deck with 213 concrete steps. Once on top, one can view the exquisite panorama of God’s wondrous creation spread as far as the eyes can see. Food is served at the restaurant The site is connected by a cemented winding road to the main highway.

HIMONTAGON HILL

Loay – 20km from Tagbilaran City: Located in Sitio Candoon in Barangay Botoc Occidental, the Himontagon Hill is a very scenic place overlooking the Mindanao Sea. Visible from atop the hill are the sparkling evening sceneries which portray a beautiful glittering city mid-sea, the lights being provided by lamps of fishermen. During clear weather, Hibok-Hibok Volcano on the island of Camiguin is visible in the distance. The hill also provides fascinating scenes during sunrises and sunsets.

OMHON RESORT

Dimiao – 40 km from Tagbilaran City: Omhon is located in one of the highest elevated parts of the province and the climate is cool. It is planned to be the summer capital of the province.

TONTONAN FALLS

Loboc – 21 km from Tagbilaran City: The Tontonan Hydroelectric Plant is generated by these falls which is the first of its kind in the Visayas. It is capable of supplying electric power to six municipalities. The plant machinery is located in a deep tunnel a few meters from the Loboc River.

LOBOC RIVER

Loboc – 21 km from Tagbilaran City: A fascinating boat ride along the Loboc River has recently been discovered. Starting from Loay Bridge which is the outlet of Loboc River, motorized pump boats start the exciting boat ride along palm-fringed banks inland. The water is serene. The boat ride ends near the Busay Falls where the cascading water provides a pleasant bathing spot.

BUSAY FALL

Sevilla – 34 km from Tagbilaran City: Busay Falls are located inland of the Loboc River past Sevilla town. These beautiful falls provide exciting scenery for bathers who flock here during weekends. Two little islets in the middle of the river make the place an ideal site for picnickers.

BADIANG SPRINGS

Valencia – 44 km from Tagbilaran City: An underground freshwater spring gushes from twin pipes near the sea. The large volume of water normally flows over a waterfall but can be diverted to fill an adjacent swimming pool. Swimmers can choose between the large pool, a small children’s pool, or the sea. Sheltered picnic tables are on a veranda overlooking a smooth-stone beach.

INAMBACAN FALLS

Antiquera – 19 km from Tagbilaran City: A beautiful cascading waterfall in a forest setting, it has potential as a water supply source. It is located about one kilometer from the Poblacion.

HINAGDANAN CAVE

Dauis – 6 km from Tagbilaran City: An eerie underworld cavern of stalactites and stalagmites its underground pool catches fresh, cool water gushing from its rock walls. Shafts of sunlight pierce through two natural openings almost directly above the pool. It is located about 2 1/2 km from the Poblacion.

BOHOL MUSEUM

Hontanosa Street, Tagbilaran City: Once the home of former President Carlos P. Garcia and his family, the museum gives the visitor a feel of what Bohol was, is and will be. Also on display are memorabilia, relics and samples of island flora and fauna.

MAN-MADE ATTRACTIONS

JAYCEE PROMENADE

Tagbilaran City: A joint project of the Bohol Jaycees and the city government, the promenade juts into Tagbilaran Bay near the K of C reclamation area. It is a favorite spot for lovers who stroll in the late afternoon to watch the sunset across the bay.

RIZAL PARK

Tagbilaran City: Previously known as Plaza Principe, it was renamed after Jose Rizal and contains a life-sized statue of the national hero. It is located in front of the Capitol Building and St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Flag poles for the Flags of Nations were installed by the Tagbilaran Lion’s Club where flags of different countries are raised particularly during their national day.

CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND AND MINI PARK

Tagbilaran City: Near the St. Joseph Cathedral is the Lion’s Children’s Playground where the little kids enjoy with playground facilities. Across is the Lionnette’s Mini Park. A beautiful fountain with dancing waters has been installed. The park is being landscaped and improved by the provincial government.

MAGSIHA SWIMMING POOL

Balilihan – 24 km from Tagbilaran City: This is a swimming pool supplied by water from a nearby spring. Barrio folks take time out to enjoy bathing in this artificial pool.

MAGSAYSAY CAMP

Bilar – 45 km from Tagbilaran City: This Boy Scout camp is cool and tranquil. The entire area is surrounded by tall trees that make it a pleasant place to stay. It is located in the mountains a few kilometers from the Poblacion of Bilar town. The campgrounds are one of the best in the area.

BILARMA CAMP

Bilar – 45 km from Tagbilaran City: This is the provincial girl scout encampment. A beautiful site for camping where the youth communes with nature. There is a swimming pool where abundant fresh water cascades from a source which seems inexhaustible even during summer. Bathers from Tagbilaran take the long ride just to enjoy the beauty of the site.
